FAQs

What is a C/DI?

1

A Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) is a Deaf or Hard of Hearing individual who has received certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or another recognized certifying body. A Deaf Interpreter (DI) is a qualified person who has undergone training and is in the process of obtaining certification as a CDI.

When is a C/DI needed?

2

When a Deaf consumer uses a unique mode of communication or is in a stressful and unfamiliar situation, a hearing interpreter may struggle to provide effective communication access. In such cases, a Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) or a Deaf Interpreter (DI) may be necessary to facilitate clear communication. Examples of unique communication modes include individuals who:

- come from other countries and use foreign signed languages,

- communicate using ‘home signs’ instead of standardized signed language, or

- are DeafBlind or have limited vision.

Are C/DI effective?

3

Effective communication occurs when two individuals share the same native language, culture, and extralinguistic knowledge. This is generally more successful than communication between individuals using their second or third language. Additionally, deaf interpreters receive specialized training that enables them to adapt their language to communicate effectively with individuals who use various modes of communication.
